Languages Advanced
Teaching modern languages has always been something of a paradox: despite low demand from students across the UK, it consistently ranks at the top of employers’ desired skill sets. For those who are already committed to the subject, I offer the chance to push your knowledge - both practical and academic - to the next level. During my degree, I completed a year abroad in which I studied at Università per Stranieri Di Siena and Rinaldo Franci classical conservatoire, Siena. I also worked at letting agency Paris Attitude, Paris, on top of other pursuits. My first hand experience working and studying in the target countries has allowed me to convey my professional fluency to students looking to surpass the mostly grammatical and written-based work at school. This may involve help with improving essays, conversation classes, literature work and more.
Languages Basics
Learning a foreign language can seem like a daunting task. Without the time or means to visit a foreign country, it can be very difficult to learn and apply the basics. I am an accredited tutor, working for MyTutor, with a Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) certificate. The former has given me experience working with students who struggle with the basics in foreign languages. The latter provided me with the necessary teaching methods. Combining the two, I understand how to help the student through the often dry process of grammar learning, in an engaging and innovative way, and thus unlocking the potential of more exciting practical and cultural work. If you have an upcoming exam, or are struggling to progress to the next level, this lesson type is the right one you. We will look at grammar, vocabulary, common mistakes, and better ways to learn languages.
Maths Tutoring
I specialise in helping students catch up with their maths syllabus. Whether you have had to take time off school, have not received prior adequate teaching, or are not at your desired standard, I am here to help. My priority is to first diagnose the problem, then provide the solution. Sometimes, it is a case of covering or revising specific topics, for which I can provide short-term teaching plans. Other times, it is a more deep-rooted problem such as low self-confidence or lack of exam technique: for this, the best approach is my long-term lesson plan to help students boost their exam grades, from school entrance exams to A-level. Most importantly, I understand the eventual need of the student to progress independently without my help.
Teaching Approach
The first step is to book a free consultation (which you can do here). During this video call, I will find out from the parents and student the strengths and weaknesses in the chosen subject area, what level the student has reached, and what they are looking to get out of private lessons. I may also provide some sample questions to assess the student’s level. This allows me to tailor my lesson approach for the student’s needs, whilst personally introducing myself.
In the first lesson, we will hone in on the precise problems facing the students. If the problem is a specific topic in maths, for example, I will employ a ‘ladder system’ in which the questions get gradually harder until we get stuck. From there the lessons follow a broad pattern of warming up, note-taking for new concepts, problem solving, independent work, and recaps. Depending on the student and parents’ wishes, homework may be set.
For the longer term lesson plans, we will cover a broader range. Students taking the ‘Languages Advanced’ course will look at practical areas in each lesson - speaking practice, for example - with the aim of improving core skills essential for exams and beyond. We will then look at wider cultural studies - say, studying a work of literature - that we can spread out over several lessons, allowing for a deeper analysis.
